But right now, it's all about the The Avengers, this summers big time superhero movie. The Avengers is the get-together of the previous years' Marvel films and their main characters. These include Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor and Captain America, along with agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Black Widow (first seen in Iron Man 2) and Hawkeye (brief cameo in Thor), all of which are brought together by S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury.
As the line goes in the original comics: "And there came a day, a day unlike any other when earth's mightiest heroes and heroines found themselves united against a common threat - on that day, the Avengers were born - to fight the foes no single superhero could withstand".
It has yet to be revealed who or what exactly that foe is in the movie other than Loki along with some kind of army, an army which you'll only see shortly in this new trailer as well. At the end though, we see a new giant monster or spacecraft chasing Iron Man, this has been rumoured to be called Leviathan, which could give an idea of who or what the army is, but could also just be a name.. Nevermind, check out the trailer, it's pretty awesome
Now, along with each new trailer, or each bit of news about either The Avengers or The Dark Knight Rises which are the two big competitors as far as superhero films go this summer, a lot of debate always starts to stir in the different forums. All of a sudden you might be considered a socalled Nolanite if you for some reason is looking more forward to TDKR or a Marvelnite if you prefer The Avengers..
Personally, I'm most excited about The Avengers, which is simply because the Marvel universe is where my heart lies. That being said, I'm a huge Batman fan as well, and while Nolan is very far from true to the comic (something that's important to be as a comicbook fan), his films has been great and I'm sure this third and last one will be as well.
A lot of the discussion between fans of the two franchises is about about whether one or the other will make the most money, get the best reviews or Oscar nominations and so on and so forth. These fans get seriously worked up in their discussions and talks shit at anybody disagreeing with them. Of course, there is no way to be sure all of these people are actual comicbook fans, but I'd say it's fair to assume a lot of them are, given that they debate often on a site called comicbookmovie.com. And for those of them that actually read the comics and in doing so, have some sort of relationship with these stories and characters, I have to say: you're a bunch of idiotic, trash talking simpletons. Honestly, who gives a fuck which makes the most $ or gets best reviews, it should be a hell of a lot more important that each of the films are actually worth seeing, I mean seriously, how often do we get good comicbook movies? I really have high hopes for the Avengers and I think it looks good and all and I have a lot of faith in Joss Whedon, both as a writer and director. BUT I definately still have that nagging fear in the back of my head, that this whole thing might be crap.. We've seen it with so many movies based on superheroes, adaptations in general actually. Those that look more forward to Nolan's TDKR can rest easier, I'd say, since it has already been established that this guy knows how to make a good Batman film. And that's despite several mistakes and odd choices of changes compared to the original source material.
I dont know which will be the biggest of these two in terms of reviews or money and I dont care either.. As a comic fan, I'm simply hoping both to be as good as possible and in The Avengers case, if it's awesome, be good enough for a sequel.
